Favorite San Diego HOT Spots

DT San Diego's East Village

You're probably scratching your head, wondering where the heck East Village is in San Diego. Well, that's the best part about it. While the Gaslamp Quarter has been in the limelight for decades, the East Village scene is a nice little get away. So, the next question is: what's there? If you go down 6th Avenue and meet J Street you'll find Stingaree Restaurant, Club, and Sky Bar; Jsix Restaurant and Bar; and Tivoli's Bar (a nice local hang out for post ball game). Continue East to 10th & 11th Ave. you'll find BASIC, an East Coast style Pizza Restaurant, Bar/Club that offers the best bare essentials: thin crust pizza (or pies as they call it - pick your own toppings), pear gorgonzola salad, excellent wine and beer selection; live DJ + Club after 10pm. The latest addition is El Vitral, an upsacle Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Lounge -  a paradise for tequila conniseurs. They have an exotic selection of appetizers, entrees, and margharitas. It's a nice vibrant ambiance that's definitely worth a visit. Finally, if you're into Urban art SUSHI is your place.

La Jolla

It’s easy to see why La Jolla is one of the most popular destinations in the world --- Mt. Soledad, the Children’s Pool, and shopping on Prospect Street. As for us locals, we’re just stoked about the beach, surf, and neighborhood eats. It’s a mellow place to be, and an awesome place to stay if you surf.  Breakfast at Pannikin’s is required as well as a sandwich from Sandwich Club or the Cheese Shop. If you’re into seafood, El Pescador has the freshest selection and an excellent Salmon Burger.   Hike down to Black’s and play volleyball with some naked dudes and ladies at the unofficial “nudity permitted” section below the Glider Port. It’s the closest beach you’ll find to a French one.

Solana Beach/Cardiff

Home to more than a handful of professional surfers, this HWY 101 stretch offers a variety of breaks starting from Seaside to Moonlight.  A breakfast burrito from Pipe’s Café is highly recommended as well as an acai bowl from Swami’s Cafe. Naked Café is also an excellent place to breakfast, lunch, or brunch for healthy eaters. If you’re into comfort foods like pizza, garlic bread, and beer you must eat at Pizza Port. For people who have a bad sweet tooth, stop by VGs for a fresh donut or pastry.

Summer Survival Tips

Thirty days left before all hell breaks loose.

La Jolla, CA — Friday, May 7, 2010

Traffic. "Not Leaving" signs hung below the trunk door. Kids and more kids. Endless lines. Lost drivers. These are all excellent signs for the San Diego economy, and on the other hand overwhelming chaos. Being a native, I have figured out a few ways to survive the less than ninety days of other people's summer vacation.  Tip 1) Early bird always catches the worm. If you arrive at the beach early you will skip the traffic both ways, find the best parking spot, and grab the best plot of sand. Tip 2) Take side streets. If you are from here, you know the other routes to GET IN and OUT of La Jolla. Even if it means a mile longer, it beats waiting in line for 45 minutes. On a side note: DO NOT exit off La Jolla Scenic Drive when you're coming into La Jolla from the 52.  Law enforcement is waiting for unfortunate victims that decide to make a U-Turn to cut the line OR to go through the neighborhood: there is a no turning left between the hours of 7:00AM and 10:00AM. I received a $350.00 ticket for that. Tip 3) Parking a little farther than you would like is better for your health. Tip 4) Avoid the theme parks at all costs unless you're going to the Wavehouse at Mission Beach. Seeing starfish and dolphins in real life is way better than ones in the tank. Tip 5) Keep it moving!

Best Acai Bowls in San Diego

It's Ah-Sah-EE not Ah-Kai!

San Diego, CA — Spring 2010

Brazilians have made an awesome contribution to San Diego. Along with Brazilian cut bikinis, they brought the Acai Bowl from Rio to here. What am I talking about?  You know, the purple smoothie beverage looking thing topped with blueberries, strawberries, bananas, granola, and honey; when you see the letters A-C-A-I you want to say "Ah-Kai". Well it's Ah-Sah-EE and be sure to remember the pronunciation when you order one from these excellent places:

1) Chronic Smoothies/Blazin' Grill on Turquoise Street in North Pacific Beach. Their Acai bowls are perfect for those who enjoy semi-sweet taste and shaved coconut. You pay $4.20 for a 16 Oz. loaded with Acai blended in light soy and apple juice with berries, bananas, and shaved coconut. I really like Chronic because it's lightly sweetened and the portion is awesome.

2) Rum Jungle on Mission Blvd. in the City Boxing Plaza. Their Acai bowls are full flavoured refreshers. For a little over $5.00 you can get a small bowl filled with the deep purple acai smoothie blended with apple juice topped with granola, fresh berries, banans, and finished with a generous honey drizzle.

3) Swami's Cafe on HWY 101 in Encinitas. They make their acai bowls with much love. In addition to the staple ingredients for an Acai bowl, Swami's finishes theirs with honey and bee pollen.

New Skateparks!

Skate San Diego

San Diego, CA — 2009

Carmel Valley Skatepark is the latest addition to the San Diego City Parks and Recreation. Designed by former professionals such as Tony Magnusson, the skatepark features a deep challenging concrete pool, brick pyramid and marble ledge, concrete ramps, and a bowl corner with a ditch that's kinked. If you haven't heard, in an effort to reduce costs the City skateparks have been open to the public for FREE. Skatepark photos will be posted soon or for detailed descriptions visit: www.socalskateparks.com
